Tom Davies believes Everton’s summer transfer business will help him reach a new level.
The Blues Academy graduate has played in defensive and advanced midfield roles since breaking into the first team during the second half of last season, as well as being deployed as a wing-back in the second leg of the UEFA Europa League qualifier against MFK Ružomberok last week.
Manager Ronald Koeman has been busy bolstering his ranks during the off-season, with Davy Klaassen and Wayne Rooney two of the recent recruits who could potentially be vying for a place in midfield with Davies.
There is a wealth of other international experience in the middle of the park, with Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gana Gueye, James McCarthy, Gareth Barry, Muhamed Besic and Ross Barkley also in contention for a starting berth.
And Davies says the quality of competition has only spurred him on.
“We can’t wait for the new season to start,” added Davies. “All the lads are really looking forward to it and I think the first game is a good test for us to see where we’re at. We are doing well as a group and hopefully we can go out there against Stoke and get the win.
“We’ve got a good group and the new players have fitted in easily. They don’t feel new - it feels like we’ve known them for quite a while now. I think the group is going in a good direction, with the new players and the players we already had here.
“With the players that we have now, there’s always going to be someone ready to come in for your position if you’re not doing well, so it’s only going to help me stay on my game and get the best out of me.”
